The beginning...

When I was asked to present my vision of the world in 2070, I realised I didn't have one. Or rather, I did, but it was very scientific and dull. I needed a better one, so I wrote a letter to me now, from me in a better future. This is it. The spark for this project.

Dear Martin,

I trust this finds you well in 2025.I wanted to write to you from my PEDro-Pod - I mean my Personalised Electric DronePod - as I fly into Westminster Village to celebrate with my old friends. It is an incredibly special day here in 2070. The United Communities General Assembly has officially confirmed that we have passed back under the 1.5-degrees Centigrade global warming target! It's taken a lot of work, but goodness me is it worth it.

Once we get to the pod-port I'll be dropped straight onto a set of wheels and whisked to the meeting point in under 10 minutes. It is so much faster and efficient than what you're used to! Indeed, I hear this fully integrated transport approach has even relieved the congestion in most of the global mega-cities.

My friends and I are going to a wine bar where I hear Chateau Lafite Rothschild has released the Bio-Chem flavour-map for its famed 1959 vintage and I can't wait to try a glass. Somethings are worth preserving, wouldn't you agree?

After dinner we'll find a cyber lounge to join our Australian friends who are waiting for us to go diving with them at the Great Barrier Reef. The full-immersion haptic suits are so realistic, it really is the same as being there. And because our friends can live-stream what they're seeing, we truly are right there with them. The only thing the Augmented Reality can't do is push the real life fish out of the way, so you can get a shark swimming through you which can be a bit disconcerting! I love going there though as the sea life has really started to flourish again without all the waste and pollution, or the industrial fishing for that matter.

What else to tell you? In a couple of weeks the whole family is getting together as part of the worldwide celebrations marking 25 years since the end of the last major war. Don't get me wrong, the world certainly isn't perfect yet, but I think everyone recognises that that is such a positive achievement and hopefully one we can keep going.

Otherwise, life continues pretty much as usual. I might be retired - I am 97 years old! - but I've certainly not stopped. I spend most of my time mentoring young people from around the world on systems thinking. It is so rewarding seeing how what was so challenging for my generation is just so natural for them.

Right, we're coming in to land so take care of yourself back then and keep up the good work. We really do appreciate it!

Best wishes, Martin
