My two boys, now 54 and 51 respectively, wake up on March 21, 2070 to clean air, vibrant skies and a hum of nature that long ago replaced the roar of engines. I'm a cool 98, plucky, sharp and fully independent. Both lads often reflect on how cities are unrecognizable from what they remember, having grown up in their early years in Shanghai, China. The urban world now are islands of verdant ecosystems, woven with green corridors and vertical farms, providing fresh, local produce. Transportation is seamless and sustainable, powered by renewable energy, with high-speed networks connecting communities and autonomous vehicles minimizing congestion. However, we all choose to ride bikes since our journeys are just too enjoyable to be wasted inside a car and, besides, everything we need is within a maximum 30 minutes from our homes. The concept of waste is obsolete, replaced by closed-loop systems where resources are continuously cycled and regenerated. This is because our economy is fundamentally different. Businesses are actually celebrated as profit-generating entities, something I never thought possible. The reason is that companies now prioritize purpose over profit, focusing on environmental restoration, social justice, and economic inclusion. Thanks in large part to this, climate change is stabilized, ecosystems are thriving, and resource depletion is a thing of the past. In fact, the sense of purpose seems completely stitched into the fabric of society, manifesting in a culture of well-being, creativity, and collaboration.Technology, always agnostic, has now become a powerful ally in our pursuit of a sustainable future. We now have advanced materials science taught everywhere and this has given us biodegradable plastics and self-healing infrastructure. Precision agriculture, powered by AI and data analytics, optimizes food production while minimizing environmental impact. Farms resemble beautiful, polyculture quilts of biodiversity, where farming has become one of the most desirable roles a person can aspire too--much like being a 'firefighter' was in my day.Clean energy technologies, like advanced solar and fusion power, provide abundant, affordable energy for all. Automation has freed humans from repetitive tasks, allowing us to focus on creative pursuits, community engagement, and personal growth. Business at the local pub has never been so brisk!Socially, we live in a world of greater equity and justice. The gap between rich and poor has drastically narrowed, and everyone has access to basic necessities like food, water, healthcare, and education. Of course, the rich are still there, but they keep their heads low, almost out of shame since having too much egregious wealth is a stigma.Communities are inclusive, with a sense of belonging and shared purpose. It's hard to imagine that there used to be ghettos. Work is so much more meaningful, with individuals pursuing careers that align with their values and contribute to the well-being of society. I'm 98 and while I've retired for the umpteenth time, will probably start another business. In 2070, we aren't just surviving but actually thriving. This is the Future-Fit Society--my society--a world where humanity and nature flourish together
